History

Historical Context

The 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea prompted NATO to expand air-defence cooperation with Poland, including joint drills with U.S. forces. Building on that posture, the September 2025 Gerbera drone swarm struck 27 Polish sites, echoing the 2014 air-space violations that drove the NATO-Poland security shift. Analysts warn further Russian provocations could push Warsaw to seek permanent NATO air-policing.
