History

Historical Context

In 1999 NATO launched the 78-day Operation Allied Force, bombing Yugoslavia from 24 March to 10 June and delivering about 10,000 sorties that forced Serbian forces out of Kosovo. The campaign, carried out without UN Security Council approval, established a precedent for sustained Western air support. Today, Russia’s missile and drone attacks on Ukraine revive that legacy, prompting President Zelensky to seek additional NATO air-defence aid.
