History

Historical Context

In 1973, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Henry Kissinger and Lê Duc Tho for negotiating a cease-fire in Vietnam. The award carried 1 million Swedish kronor, and the decision sparked protests from over 200 peace activists worldwide in major cities. Like Kissinger’s contested laureate status, President Donald Trump now claims entitlement to the 2026 prize amid disputed peace claims in the DRC and Cambodia-Thailand border. These recurring controversies highlight how Nobel selections can amplify political narratives, prompting future committees to scrutinize nomination legitimacy and transparency.
