History

Historical Context

After the three-day Crown Heights riot of August 19-21 1991—sparked by a crash involving the motorcade of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson and resulting in one Jewish student’s death—the city formed the Crown Heights Coalition and expanded hate-crime resources under Mayor David Dinkins. That legacy of inter-community outreach informs today’s municipal funding of groups combating rising hate incidents.
