History

Historical Context

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, forcing the SEC to relocate its championship game to Atlanta. The storm caused $125 billion in damage, displaced over 1 million residents, and prompted Commissioner Greg Sankey to draft emergency scheduling protocols. Today's Alabama-Georgia showdown mirrors that precedent, as rain forecasts and President Donald Trump's attendance raise concerns that the game may face postponement under Sankey's authority. If delayed, the teams must still complete nine conference games, preserving playoff eligibility and echoing the 2005 disruption’s lasting impact on SEC scheduling.
