History

Historical Context

When the WNBA launched in 1997, the league’s inaugural season featured eight teams and a $60-million television contract with NBC. Founding star Lisa Leslie, playing for the Los Angeles Sparks, earned a $75,000 salary that set early pay benchmarks for the league. Today's Indiana Fever free-agency negotiations, highlighted by Caitlin Clark’s EPIC eligibility and Amber Cox’s cap strategy, echo those early salary-setting debates. The 1997 financial foundation now drives record viewership like the 2.6-million ESPN audience and 17,044 Dream fans, shaping future league growth.
