History

Historical Context

The BBC’s 2012 retraction of “The Secret” follows a string of high-profile editorial failures, such as the Newsnight libel case that forced a £185,000 settlement with Lord McAlpine and the Cliff Richard raid that generated 594 complaints. Repeated legal costs—£330,000 on the Balen report—have driven the corporation to tighten fact-checking guidelines.
