IDF Operation Targets Hamas Shati Battalion Commander

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they killed Muhammad Muhsen Nimr Yazji, a commander of Hamas’s Shati Battalion, during strikes in Gaza City on Monday. Yazji was identified by the IDF as having overseen the captivity of several Israelis who were later released.

Hostages Previously Held by Yazji

Yazji’s known former hostages include:

  • Emily Damari, a 30-year-old British-Israeli who was abducted from her home in Kfar Aza alongside Gali and Ziv Berman.
  • Romi Gonen, seized at the Nova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im.
  • Matan Angrest, taken from his tank near Nahal Oz after his fellow soldiers—Capt. Daniel Perez, St-Sgt. Itay Chen, and Sgt. Tomer Leibovitz—were killed by Hamas.

Damari and Gonen were released on January 19, 2025, together with Doron Steinbrecher. Angrest is scheduled for release on October 13, 2025.

Official Statement from the IDF

The IDF’s announcement framed the killing as part of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling Hamas leadership responsible for hostage-taking and attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers. The statement emphasized that targeting individuals who “held several former hostages” was intended to reduce Hamas’s capacity to conduct future abductions.

Implications and Next Steps

Eliminating a commander linked to multiple hostage cases underscores Israel’s focus on neutralizing figures directly involved in kidnapping operations. The scheduled release of Angrest later in 2025 suggests ongoing negotiations or prisoner-exchange mechanisms remain active despite the heightened military pressure. The IDF’s action may influence future Hamas command structures and could affect the timing of remaining hostage releases.
