History

Historical Context

In 2008 Barack Obama became the first African-American president, and his campaign set fundraising records by raising over $650 million privately and rejecting public financing. That donor-driven model resurfaces in today’s Georgia governor’s race, where Obama backs former mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms while billionaire Herschel Jackson spends roughly $100 million of his own wealth, echoing the 2008 surge in private contributions.
