History

Historical Context

Barack Obama’s 2008 Detroit rally helped lift Democratic turnout, contributing to his election with 365 electoral votes and a historic win in Michigan’s swing-state battleground. The campaign’s grassroots model, which registered hundreds of thousands of new voters, set a template that the 2026 rally—featuring Governor-candidate Jocelyn Benson and Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed—now emulates to mobilize early voters statewide.
