Global Surge of Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations Marks Third Anniversary of Oct. 7 Attack

By Drooid · · How we work

Overview of Planned Demonstrations

The Israeli and Jewish diaspora is set to observe the third anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led invasion and massacre in southern Israel with a wave of public actions. The Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry reports that 262 pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protests and events have been identified in 37 countries. On Oct. 7 itself, 75 demonstrations are scheduled worldwide, while a further 121 are slated for Oct. 10-11, and activities continue through Oct. 14.

Geographic Distribution and Risk Levels

The United States leads with 45 planned events, followed by Spain, Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy. Germany and Canada each anticipate 14 protests, France 10, and the Netherlands eight. Among the total, 21 demonstrations are classified as high-risk and 66 as medium-risk. Approximately 45 protests are expected near Israeli embassies, consulates or other diplomatic assets, including 10 high-risk gatherings. High-risk sites include the Israeli missions in Seoul, Bogotá, Mexico City and Bangkok, as well as public squares in Amsterdam, Helsinki and Ottawa’s Parliament Hill. Additional high-risk rallies are slated for Milan, Rome, Paris, London and Berlin, prompting heightened police monitoring. Canada records the highest concentration of high-risk protests, with four planned in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa.

Security Concerns and Official Warnings

Israeli and local authorities have repeatedly warned that the scale and proximity of these demonstrations could elevate security risks for Israelis and Jewish communities. The ministry’s data, drawn from the National Center for Combating Antisemitism (J-SOC), underscores the potential for heightened tensions, especially at locations adjacent to diplomatic premises. Police forces in multiple host nations are preparing increased surveillance and crowd-control measures in anticipation of the high-risk events.

Potential Impact

The coordinated global actions reflect a sustained surge in anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian activism that has intensified over the past three years. By concentrating protests around symbolic dates and diplomatic sites, organizers aim to draw international attention to the conflict, while host governments balance the right to protest with the imperative to protect vulnerable communities and diplomatic personnel.
