Launch Overview
Apple announced that it will hold a product launch on Tuesday, October 13, with a focus on smart-home hardware. The event will be hosted in Tribeca, New York, where invited media will receive hands-on time with the new devices. Apple has not clarified whether the announcements will be made via a live presentation or a press release.
Home Hub (HomePad) Details
The centerpiece of the launch is expected to be a dedicated home hub—referred to in coverage as the “HomePad.” Leaks and operating-system code suggest the device will feature a 6-inch square touchscreen attached to a HomePod-style speaker and will draw AC power. A built-in camera and presence sensor are said to recognize household members, allowing the hub to display personalized widgets, photos, and apps, and to support FaceTime video calls. Apple plans to run a new homeOS on the hub, providing a distinct user interface that goes beyond the capabilities of existing HomeKit hubs such as the Apple TV 4K and current HomePod models. Pricing is rumored to be around $350.
Refreshes to Existing Devices
Apple is also expected to update its HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K. According to Apple senior VP of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak’s October 8 tweet, the HomePod mini will receive new color options, an N1 networking chip for improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a faster S-series processor that will enable “Siri AI.” The Apple TV 4K is slated to get an A19 or A19 Pro chip, additional RAM, the same N1 chip, and an upgraded Siri Remote. An OLED iPad mini is rumored to be announced at the same event, featuring a water-resistant design, a faster processor, and the first OLED display in the smaller tablet size.
Outlook and Uncertainties
While the hardware lineup is detailed in multiple leaks, Apple has not confirmed the exact specifications, pricing (aside from the hub estimate), or whether an iPad mini will indeed appear. The company’s official statements have been limited to the event date and location; further details are expected to be revealed on October 13.
