History

Historical Context

In 1968, the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise embarked on a 332-day deployment during the Vietnam War, marking the longest U.S. carrier tour at the time. The Navy recorded 5,000 combat sorties, delivering 1,200 tons of ordnance, while Admiral Elmo Zumwalt directed the effort under President Lyndon B. Johnson. USS Abraham Lincoln’s 321-day tour, delivering 3,693 sorties and 450 Tomahawk missiles, faces Senate scrutiny from Adam Schiff and Representative Sara Jacobs over crew suicides. The 1968 precedent showed prolonged carrier strain can erode morale and logistics, urging the Department of Defense to reform mental-health programs for sailors.
