History

Historical Context

During the August 2008 war, Russia sent roughly 9,000 troops into Georgia, the first post-Soviet use of force against an independent state and prompting NATO’s diplomatic response. The conflict exposed Western hesitation and led to Russia’s recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Zelenskyy’s 2024 warning of massive missile strikes on Kyiv echoes Georgia’s 2008 plea for swift allied support.
