Ironi Kiryat Shmona’s Three-Year Exile from Its Home Stadium
By Drooid · · How we work
Prolonged Displacement Since October 7
The Hamas attack on October 7 triggered a security shutdown of the northern border region, forcing Ironi Kiryat Shmona to abandon its municipal stadium. For three consecutive seasons the club has been unable to host any home matches in Kiryat Shmona, conducting all league fixtures and training sessions in venues located in the central district. The displacement has persisted despite a brief authorization to return for lower-playoff matches that was later cancelled after a new military campaign against Iran began.
Financial and Logistical Burdens
Operating away from its home city has required the club to rent apartments for players and staff in high-cost central areas, secure alternative training grounds, and absorb extensive travel expenses. Club chief executive Yossi Edri noted that these “unprecedented expenses” have drained millions of shekels that would otherwise have been allocated to squad upgrades. The loss of a regular home venue also eliminates gate revenue from the club’s modest but loyal fan base, further tightening the budget.
Challenges in Attracting Foreign Talent
The exile has complicated recruitment of overseas players. A prospective foreign signing withdrew after viewing Kiryat Shmona’s location on a map and expressing concern about the security situation. Club officials confirmed that such incidents have occurred more than once, forcing them to invest additional persuasion efforts to secure contracts. Nevertheless, the team has managed to sign players such as Sekou Bangoura, Cristian Martinez and Adrian Ugarriza, demonstrating resilience amid the logistical hurdles.
Prospects for Returning Home
Club officials remain hopeful that training can resume in Kiryat Shmona by the end of the current year, though the timeline for hosting official matches remains uncertain. Continued negotiations with security agencies and the Ministry of Culture and Sport will determine whether the club can reclaim its home field and re-establish its identity within the community.
