History

Historical Context

The 2024 gas-cylinder pipe rupture at IIT Bombay’s Hostel 6, which injured five, echoes a long record of pipeline failures. In the United States, incidents such as the 1998 South Riding, Virginia explosion are among the over 3,200 serious accidents PHMSA records since 1987. Indian regulators now look to those U.S. standards for tighter oversight.
