History

Historical Context

In March 2018, the Cambridge Analytica scandal exposed Facebook’s data misuse, prompting a federal investigation and public outcry. The Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook $5 billion in July 2019, the largest penalty ever imposed on a tech company, and mandated 87 million user privacy safeguards. Today’s films, including Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning,” echo that fallout by dramatizing Mark Zuckerberg’s role and the platform’s influence on misinformation. The settlement’s decade-long teen-use restrictions and renewed congressional hearings signal ongoing regulatory pressure that the movies aim to spotlight.
