History

Historical Context

In 1987, Tamil Nadu legend M. G. Ramachandran received a state funeral with a 21-gun salute after his death from cardiac failure. The ceremony featured the Indian tricolour draped over his casket, President R. Venkataraman’s attendance, and over 200,000 citizens lining the streets. Like Ramachandran’s honors, the 2026 cremation of actor Nana Patekar in Pune saw Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, President Droupadi Murmu, and Bollywood peers gather under the flag. These repeated high-profile tributes underscore India’s tradition of elevating cultural icons through official protocols, reinforcing political leaders’ role in shaping national memory.
