History

Historical Context

The four-day Attica uprising began on September 9 1971 when 1,281 of the roughly 2,200 inmates seized the New York prison, protesting overcrowding and abuse. Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s forceful retaking killed 43 people and prompted a state commission that led to nationwide staffing-ratio reforms and heightened prison-rights activism. Those reforms frame today’s El Castillo clash, where Mexican forces confront an overcrowded facility.
