History

Historical Context

In 2009, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama, sparking global debate over political laureates. The Committee’s 120-member board granted the $1.4 million prize after a 96-vote majority, citing Obama’s “extraordinary efforts” to strengthen international diplomacy. Similarly, 2025-26 nominations of Donald Trump for the FIFA Peace Prize, UAE Order of Zayed, and a contested Nobel nod echo the earlier controversy surrounding Obama’s award. These repeated politicized honors pressure awarding bodies to clarify criteria, lest future laureates face legitimacy challenges and diplomatic backlash.
