History

Historical Context

In 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ended 34-year Left Front rule, winning 184 seats. The BJP, then holding only three seats, secured 5.2% of the vote, translating to roughly 2.1 million ballots nationwide. Today's October 6 2026 by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar echo that shift, with BJP candidates Hasirani Rath and Shankharavh Sarkar winning decisive majorities. The pattern suggests BJP’s expanding foothold in traditionally TMC-dominated districts, potentially reshaping West Bengal’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 state election.
