History

Historical Context

In 2005, the Glazer family completed a £790 million takeover of Manchester United, reshaping English football’s ownership landscape. The acquisition, approved by the Premier League and overseen by Malcolm Glazer, sparked a 12-percent rise in the club’s market valuation within a year. Similarly, Atlético Madrid’s 2024 partnership with NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander mirrors that cross-sport investment trend, linking European soccer with North American basketball talent. The precedent suggests future clubs may pursue celebrity stakeholders to boost global brand equity and diversify revenue streams across continents.
