History

Historical Context

The 1994 Republican Revolution, driven by Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, gave Republicans a 54-seat House swing and a net gain of ten governorships, raising their total to 24 of 36 states and delivering the first GOP House majority since 1952. That coordinated messaging reshaped state policy agendas, a pattern echoed in the 2026 gubernatorial debates in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
