History

Historical Context

In 1977 a UN-sponsored conference in Geneva first proposed replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The 1990 Quito meeting marked the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s 1492 voyage and urged a year of Indigenous solidarity, leading Northern-California activists to convince the Berkeley City Council to rename October 12, 1992 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The move sparked municipal adoptions nationwide.
