History

Historical Context

In 2007, the FIA ruled that McLaren had illicitly obtained Ferrari’s technical data, stripping the team of 100 points and imposing a $100 million fine. Team principal Ron Dennis publicly decried the sanction, while Ferrari’s CEO Sergio Marchionne warned of a $150 million revenue hit from compromised designs. Similarly, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff rebuffs driver-favoritism claims, insisting Red Bull’s Max Verstappen gains no illicit edge over George Russell’s Mercedes machinery. The 2007 scandal taught teams that regulatory breaches invite massive penalties, prompting today’s rivals to emphasize transparent upgrades and equal-car policies.
