History

Historical Context

In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina forced President George W. Bush to declare a federal emergency, mobilizing FEMA after the storm caused $125 billion in damage and displaced 1.5 million people. The same pattern reappeared in October 2026 when President Donald Trump cancelled his Alabama-Georgia football appearance as Hurricane Isaias threatened Tuscaloosa. These incidents show how major hurricanes repeatedly compel U.S. leaders to prioritize public safety over political events.
