History

Historical Context

In March 2012 the Indianapolis Colts released veteran quarterback Peyton Manning after a 14-year, 208-start career, a move forced by his 2011 neck injury and the team’s 2–14 season. The release freed cap space and gave the Colts the first overall pick, which they used on Stanford’s Andrew Luck, reflecting a league-wide shift toward younger, cost-controlled quarterbacks.
