History

Historical Context

In Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, rookie safety Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass, sealing the Denver Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Butler’s 25-yard pick came after Denver’s defense forced three turnovers, while the Broncos’ defense recorded 12 sacks, the most in a Super Bowl since 1990. Similarly, Washington’s rookie linebacker Arvell Reese logged nine solo tackles, three passes defensed and an interception, echoing Butler’s immediate impact on a high-stakes game. These breakout performances pressure coaches like Dan Quinn to start quarterbacks such as Jayden Daniels despite injuries, while Hurricane Isaias adds field-position challenges.
