Story summary

Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia announced a deployment to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on 6 October 2026.
Analysts say Turkey will send air-defence, electronic-warfare gear and advisers, but no combat troops, pending parliament approval.
The deployment seeks to protect the western East-West oil pipeline and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
Turkey’s parliament must approve the Mecca defence pact before President Recep Tayyip Erdogan can ratify it.

History

Historical Context

In August 1990, the United States led a multinational coalition to defend Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after Iraq’s invasion, launching Operation Desert Shield. The coalition amassed roughly 35,000 U.S. troops, $61 billion in defense spending, and included the United Kingdom, France, and Saudi forces. Today, Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia echo that model by forming the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement to safeguard the East-West oil pipeline and holy cities. The precedent suggests regional powers will increasingly rely on joint defence pacts, potentially reshaping Middle Eastern security architecture and oil-flow stability.
