History

Historical Context

After the St. Louis Rams’ 1999 ‘Greatest Show on Turf’—a 13-3 season, 5,075 offensive yards, 31 touchdowns and Orlando Pace’s line allowing only 12 sacks—the franchise set a template for elite left tackles. In 2026, 49ers GM John Lynch cites Trent Williams’ protection of Brock Purdy, who has not been sacked in four games, as a modern echo of that 1999 dominance.
