History

Historical Context

The 1997 Montreal Screwjob, when WWE executive Vince McMahon forced Bret Hart to lose to Shawn Michaels, abruptly ended Hart’s ten-year tenure. Hart’s contract dispute involved a $5 million settlement, and the incident sparked a 30-percent drop in WWF’s pay-per-view buys that quarter. Similarly, John Cena’s December 13, 2025 loss to Gunther in Washington, D.C., and his shift to WWE ambassador duties mirror Hart’s forced exit and media pivot. These precedents show how high-profile retirements reshape wrestling’s branding, prompting cross-media ventures like Cena’s Apple TV film and the 2026 John Cena Classic.
