History

Historical Context

In 2014, New York City launched the Vision Zero initiative after 1,200 traffic-related deaths the previous year, pledging to eliminate pedestrian fatalities. Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYC Department of Transportation, and the NYPD together reduced fatal pedestrian crashes by 30 % between 2014 and 2019, saving roughly 360 lives. The 81-year-old driver’s loss of control on Allerton Avenue, investigated by the NYPD and FDNY, echoes earlier concerns about elderly motorists’ medical episodes that Vision Zero sought to address. Consequently, city officials are tightening driver-health screenings and red-light enforcement, hoping to curb similar Bronx collisions and sustain the downward trend in pedestrian deaths.
