History

Historical Context

During the 1992 quincentennial, Native American activists flooded U.S. cities, cancelled Washington’s Columbus Day parade and spurred the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Berkeley, while South Dakota renamed the holiday in 1990. A 1989 survey found 70 % of Native respondents opposed the celebration. Those protests created a lasting contest over Columbus monuments that now shapes federal and state debates on monument preservation.
