History

Historical Context

In the 1996 Tamil Nadu legislative election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) swept 173 of 234 seats, ending AIADMK’s decade-long rule. The victory hinged on anti-corruption promises championed by DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, who secured a 30 % vote share swing over incumbent J. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. Similarly, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’s 2026 by-election wins in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, led by C. Joseph Vijay, stress cash-free campaigning against the DMK-led coalition. The pattern suggests that anti-inducement narratives can reshape Tamil Nadu’s coalition arithmetic, potentially pushing emerging parties like TVK toward a majority before the 2027 general poll.
