Historical Context

In December 2008 Israel launched Operation Cast Lead, a three-week assault on Gaza that left roughly 1,400 Palestinians dead and tens of thousands of homes ruined. The offensive followed a six-month Egypt-brokered ceasefire that Hamas had largely upheld, but Israel’s raid on 4 November broke it.
