History

Historical Context

The Great Fire of London erupted in September 1666, razing much of the medieval city and prompting sweeping fire-code reforms. King Charles II ordered the demolition of 13,200 homes, while Sir Christopher Wren later rebuilt St. Paul’s Cathedral, costing roughly £1 million. Like that conflagration, the 2024 Glasgow blaze forced Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to deploy nine fire appliances and two high-reach units to contain smoke. Both incidents underscore how historic urban fires spurred stricter regulations, prompting modern authorities to prioritize rapid response and community safety measures.
