History

Historical Context

During the internal emergency declared on 25 June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi invoked Articles 352 and 356, suspended most fundamental rights and detained roughly 35,000 people under MISA. The period ended on 21 March 1977 with a Janata victory that restored democratic rule. Today, Home Minister Amit Shah’s meeting with Manipur chief Yumnam Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoes past federal interventions in state elections.
