Leaving Home and the Farewell Journey
At the beginning of the year the family sold their house and spent several months in rented accommodation. In May they traveled to the airport for a final goodbye, a moment Dani described as “very emotional.” The couple highlighted the support of a large group of family and friends who accompanied them to the terminal, noting that the presence of loved ones mattered more than material possessions.
Arrival and First Impressions of Bali
Although Dani and Tom had visited Bali previously, the island’s rapid development created a strong culture shock. They recalled that the heightened senses—new smells, sights, and sounds—made the first days feel overwhelming, especially for their daughter, who experienced emotional ups and downs and jet lag. The family noted that Uluwatu, once quiet fifteen years ago, had become busy, with scooters crowding the streets and a general sense of nervousness while walking.
Daily Life, Food and Community
Both parents emphasized the immediate appeal of Balinese cuisine, describing the food as “amazing” from the moment they tasted it. They also praised the kindness of local people, calling them “beautiful” and “very kind.” The tropical heat was another vivid element of their new environment, adding to the sensory contrast with their previous home.
Emotional Reflections and Ongoing Adjustment
The couple reflected that the emotional weight of leaving home was balanced by excitement about their new life. They expressed gratitude for the strong network of family and friends that eased the transition and underscored that the people they miss most are those from back home, not material belongings. Their daughter’s adjustment remains a work in progress, with the family continuing to navigate jet lag, cultural differences, and the bustling atmosphere of modern Bali.
