Historical Context

Indira Gandhi’s 25 June 1975 proclamation of a national Emergency gave her extraordinary powers, leading to the arrest of more than 100,000 opposition figures and the suspension of elections. The episode remains a benchmark of executive overreach, echoed today as Mamata Banerjee and Derek O’Brien lead legislators from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
