History

Historical Context

In July 2006, Zinedine Zidane was sent off in the World Cup final and later received a three-match ban and a CHF 7,500 fine after FIFA’s disciplinary review. The Portuguese federation’s September 2024 suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo for abandoning the Nations League camp echoes that precedent, showing governing bodies continue to enforce strict player discipline.
