History

Historical Context

When Indira Gandhi invoked Article 352 on 25 June 1975, with President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s signature, the Emergency gave her decree power, suspended civil liberties and led to more than 100,000 arrests, including under MISA (34,988 detainees). The recent police entry into Delhi’s Tilak Bhavan and Mumbai’s National College echoes those emergency-era detentions, reviving calls for stronger judicial oversight.
