History

Historical Context

India’s National Highways Development Project, launched in 1998 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, built the 5,846-km Golden Quadrilateral and the 7,142-km North-South/East-West corridors at a cost of roughly Rs 300 billion each. Managed by the NHAI, the program ended in 2018 and merged into Bharatmala, a precedent for today’s INR13,000-crore Chennai upgrades shaping Tamil Nadu’s electoral calculus.
