History

Historical Context

In June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a nationwide Emergency, suspending elections and civil liberties across India. During the Emergency, the Delhi Police arrested roughly 1.5 million citizens, including opposition leaders such as Morarji Desai and journalist Kuldip Nayar, while the Congress party tightened control. The BJP’s recent blockade of Rahul Gandhi’s Delhi protest and JNU’s dismissal of professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam mirror that 1975 suppression, targeting senior politicians and academics alike. Consequently, India’s judiciary, exemplified by the Supreme Court, and global watchdogs now press for transparent legal safeguards to preserve democratic institutions.
