Summary

Yorkshire Wildlife Park creates

Yorkshire Wildlife Park created the “Land of the Tigers” exhibit to protect endangered Amur tigers.
The attraction opened in 2011 on a purpose-built two-acre reserve.
The park, opened in 2009, markets the tiger area as a conservation education hub.
Only about 500 Amur tigers remain in the wild, highlighting the exhibit’s breeding importance.

History

Historical Context

Two high-profile attacks at San Francisco Zoo— a keeper bite in 2006 and the December 25 2007 escape of Siberian tiger Tatiana that killed a visitor— triggered OSHA fines, enclosure redesign and the first AZA visitor fatality, spurring worldwide zoo-safety reforms. Those standards frame the October 10 2026 fatal breach at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, underscoring persistent risks to the roughly 500 wild Amur tigers.
