History

Historical Context

In 2012, a Bengal tiger named Ming killed a visitor at New York’s Bronx Zoo, prompting nationwide zoo safety reforms. The Bronx Zoo’s 1,200-square-meter tiger habitat, managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, recorded a $2.5 million settlement for the victim’s family. Similarly, the 2021 fatal encounter with a tiger at Naples Zoo and today’s Altai attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park echo those earlier lapses in enclosure security. Consequently, UK regulators and the European Association of Zoos have introduced mandatory 3-meter barrier standards, aiming to prevent further deaths and costly legal claims.
