History

Historical Context

The Houthi-backed Yemeni rebels first struck Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq and Khurais plants on 14 September 2019, cutting about 5 % of global oil supply. Subsequent drone and missile raids—including a 2022 attack on Abu Dhabi and a July 2026 strike on Abqaiq during the Iran-Saudi conflict—showed a growing capability. On 8-9 October 2026 they hit Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport, killing three and prompting airlines to suspend flights.
