Historical Context

The April 20 1999 Columbine massacre, in which Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher and wounded 24, sparked nationwide gun-control debates and led to new school-security tactics and background-check proposals. Those reforms resurfaced after the 2026 Erie, Pennsylvania shooting that left nine dead, prompting lawmakers to revisit the federal background-check legislation first introduced after Columbine.
