Summary

LeBron James Debuts

LeBron James debuted for the 76ers in a 114-108 preseason loss to Brooklyn.
He played 18 minutes, scoring 10 points on shooting with four rebounds, five assists, one steal.
James signed an $8 million contract with the 76ers in July, entering his 24th season.
He said the roster must gel after the defeat and aims to win the title since 1983.
James denied scolding Joel Embiid for arriving late to practice.

Summary

LeBron James Helicopter Commute

LeBron James uses a Fanatics-owned Leonardo AW139 helicopter, costing about $650 per Manhattan landing.
The helicopter shuttles between a Camden, N.J., heliport at the Sixers facility and West 30th St. Chelsea Pier.
Flight tracking recorded 18 trips in early October, each lasting 30–45 minutes one way.
Environmental groups label the AW139 commute an “excessive carbon footprint” because of its high emissions.
The arrangement complies with NBA rules, unlike the Clippers’ salary-cap scandal involving Kawhi Leonard.

Summary

Ariel Hukporti Injured

Ariel Hukporti’s Achilles tear leaves the Sixers without a primary backup center for 2026-27.
Coach Nick Nurse said LeBron James could fill center minutes with Dean Wade, Jabari Walker and Dominick Barlow.
Dean Wade’s four-year, $38.7 million deal includes $30 million guaranteed and a $9 million starting salary.
With Hukporti out, Adem Bona and Dominick Barlow remain the only options to spell Joel Embiid at center.

History

Historical Context

After the NBA reinstated a salary cap in the 1984-85 season—limiting teams to about $4.6 million to promote competitive balance—the league adopted a soft-cap system with exceptions such as the Larry Bird rule. Caps have risen to $123.655 million by 2022-23, allowing franchises like the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers to reshape payrolls and fund high-value deals and ancillary assets such as the Sixers’ Fanatics-owned helicopter.
