History

Historical Context

The modern fluid market traces back to the NFL’s March 1 1993 adoption of unrestricted free agency, letting players with four years’ experience move freely. The framework survived the 2011 lockout settlement, approved by a 31-0-1 vote, and now lets teams such as the Dallas Cowboys sign high-value agents and the Arizona Cardinals negotiate Marvin Harrison Jr.’s rookie contract.
