History

Historical Context

During India’s Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended democratic rights, leading to mass arrests of opposition leaders and activists. The government’s Directorate of Information and Broadcasting compiled a surveillance list of over 1 million citizens, while the police detained roughly 100,000 political prisoners. The October 10, 2026 raid by Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar, entering Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and closing 45 metro stations, echoes the Emergency’s suppression of dissent. Such parallels warn that unchecked emergency powers risk eroding constitutional safeguards, prompting civil-society calls for judicial review and legislative reforms.
